TOURNAMENT TIPS

Packing for the Tournament

·         Your Gi - make sure it meets the tournaments requirements in length, fit, color, patches, and no holes!

·         An extra Gi - If your Gi rips during a match, you could be asked to find a replacement within a certain time limit. If you have more than one Gi it is a good idea to bring an extra to the competition just in case.

·         Water - Make sure you bring enough water! Stress, sweat, and fatigue can all make you thirsty; come prepared with at least a few water bottles. Some of my teammates like to bring coconut water because it has a lot of electrolytes (I haven't tried it, but my team recommends it!)

·         Snacks - What you eat on competition day is important. Make sure you get a healthy breakfast, and bring some healthy snacks with you to the tournament.

·         A Friend - Hopefully you already have your teammates and a coach coming to the tournament so you will have someone in your corner. At the very least, try and have a friend with you to help you warm up, stay relaxed and give you support. Not to mention, take pictures of you up on the podium with your medal!

Snacks for the Day of the Tournament

Some good ones I like are: bananas, protein bars, almonds and honey sticks.
The benefit of eating honey before a jiu jitsu match comes from the glucose that is absorbed quickly by the body, which then provides you with an immediate boost of energy. Eating honey 20-30 minutes before your match can help you fight fatigue and help give you a natural boost. Honey sticks are more convenient than carrying around a sticky honey bear, and they are easy to pack into your bag and bring to the tournaments. Just bite the ends and suck out the honey.. easy!
Win or Learn
Competitions are a way for you to learn more about yourself, and see what you need to work on to become a stronger jiu jitsu practitioner. Everyone is eventually going to lose a match; it's just the way the sport is. You learn so much more from a loss than you do from a win, so don't be hard on yourself if you lose and take the opportunity to improve the holes in your game.

Learn from your losses and move forward; never dwell on them; and always keep a positive attitude about competing. Competition is only part of your jiu jitsu journey, and should always be looked at as a chance to learn and grow.

Why you should compete in a BJJ Tournament.

3 Reasons Why You Should Compete In A Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Tournament

Many Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners enjoy the various positive aspects of BJJ training. Everyone has a different goal when training jiu jitsu. Some train to stay in shape, learn self-defense, or be the next Mundials or SUPER CUP champion. Regardless of the reason for your training, you should still consider competing in a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournament due to the many positives you will get out of the experience.
You don’t have to be super-serious and compete constantly (unless your goal is to become a sport jiu jitsu champion), you should however compete at least once a year and here are the reasons why:
The first reason why you should compete is an obvious one which is to test yourself. Often times when we train with the same people, we get to know each other’s moves. After a while, you and your partner become predictable which often times lead to stagnation in your progress. Competition against other people in a Brazilian jiu jitsu tournament gives you a different perspective. Grappling various sizes, strength, and technique can only enhance your own game.
The second reason would be team-building. When you and your training partners compete, you build a bond by helping each other prepare for the upcoming tournament. You also tighten your friendship by helping each other out during competition. It’s a great cohesive positive vibe all around which will make your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu team stronger.
The third reason is personal evaluation. By testing yourself with other people your rank and size, you’re able to see the weakness of your game. This is important because you can work on these flaws when you go back to your gym. This also lets your instructor know where you stand compared to students of other schools. He or she can then work to make your technique better for future events.
While other Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners prefer to just train in-house, competing in a tournament is such a positive experience that anyone training should do it at least once a year. With the reasons I listed, one should look at this event as a fun and learning experience rather than having to prove how tough you are. With the right mindset, you will come out of a Brazilian jiu jitsu tournament feeling positive and have a clearer understanding of your own personal growth in BJJ.
